“Das / To” is a highly topical and important play about reproductive self-determination, social pressure and the question of who has the right to decide over a woman's body.

The play tells of women from Poland, Hungary and Slovakia who come to a Viennese abortion clinic to have the procedure. They set out their different reasons, reveal their fears and describe how difficult it is to find help or support in their home countries.

It raises questions of shame, justification and public perception: must a woman be ashamed of having IT done? Must she suffer in order to be understood? May she leaf through a magazine without a care before the procedure, or is even that already judged morally?

In conversations with the medical staff, social, religious and political tensions emerge: long-married couples have to be taught about contraception, a religious upbringing blocks even access to medical help, and misconceptions about abortion reveal deep structural shortcomings.

Magdalena Marszałkowska knows how to give this difficult and sensitive subject moments of humour too — as a way of pausing, breathing and looking closely.
